WAYNE'S WORDS
December 2005
TOPIC: 2005

December is a very busy month. Holidays, traveling, eating, visiting, more eating, shopping, gift giving, taking stuff back, going to "after holiday" sales, taking more stuff back and of course making those resolutions.
A while back I stopped making resolutions because they never ever came through, and by February you usually forgot what they were anyway

What I like to do is reflect, to look back at the year, the good, the bad and the ugly.
So, here goes, my reflection on 2005.

In 2005, I had a somewhat normal, typical, non-eventful year.
I did only one triathlon, Lake St. Louis.
It seemed like I was always injured, or races came on busy weekends.
I did watch a few triathlons, Gulf Coast, and Half-Max, which is always kinda fun.
As a spectator, though, you ALWAYS really wish you were doing the race.
I managed to visit my daughter, Kristen, in KC a few times.
I went to all the Tigers home games in Columbia, and did a few other road trips.
I took my old heavy mountain bike off E-Bay, fixed it up and now enjoy riding it again.
I made some new friends, lost contact with some old friends and got closer to others.
I did a lot of articles for this website and hopefully got better as a freelance writer.
I was able to be a co-host for our world famous SBRSTL radio show on KYMC for a few shows, which was totally fun.
I took steps to move out of a condo and into a house.
I got a little older and a little heavier and lost a little more hair.
I stayed alive and basically healthy for one more year.
But, the thing that I looked forward to the most in 2005 was getting one year closer to retirement as a teacher.
After you reflect, you go back and see the good and bad things that happened and then, try to do whatever you can to repeat the good times and eliminate the bad.
I'd like to do more triathlons and do more quality training.
Gone are the days of 3-4 hour bike rides followed by a 4 mile run.
I now have to be smart on how I train.
If I train too much and the ol' body tells me in no uncertain terms that I'm doing too much, I then have to down Ibuprofen like candy and spend a few weeks going to a chiropractor.
So training has to be better planned with quality rest time between quality training.
I have to eat better and try to stay away from all the junk that's always laying around.
I'd like to move into a house and out of my condo. I know, everyone says I should just stay in the condo, but when I retire I'll need something to do besides training. Having a house will keep me busy.
I'll try to be a better writer, triathlete, coach, teacher, friend, and most important, father.
I'm not sure how yet, but when I have decisions on what to do, I'll try to make the choice that will allow me to be the best that I can, while at the same time helping those who are most important to me.
Most of all, I'll try not worry so much and try to have fun whenever and however I can.
I guess I still do make resolutions.
I just don't call them that.
I just call it being a better person. Here's wishing in 2006 you'll make those choices in your life so you're the best at everything you do and try to have as much fun as you can without getting into too much trouble. Happy Holidays
Healthy New Year.
Until 2006,
Wayne
