Morton's Neuroma

Morton's Neuroma is a condition that occurs in the forefoot typically between the metatarsal bones ofinj-foot.gif (13211 bytes) the third and fourth toes.  Like most inflammations, it is a result of repetitive irritation.  The nerve running between the bone heads gets compressed. This pinching can cause discomfort levels that are excruciating.

This syndrome is normally a result of ill-fitting shoes that have too tight a toe box.  However, our old nemesis over-pronation can be to blame as well, particularly during the push-off phase.

Addressing this condition can take two approaches.  The less invasive measures being mechanical corrections, a metatarsal pad, orthotics, ultrasound treatments, anti-inflammatory dosage, and ice.  In extreme cases, surgery may be required.  The recovery time is normally only a couple of weeks.
